My friend Nour -- the beautiful model for these photos -- has been asking me for a cute beanie for years now. While I could have gone with my tried-and-true Chilcotin Beanie (which is not currently an available pattern), I decided I would create something a bit more sleek, with a unique twist. And that's how the North Shore Beanie was born.

I wanted to create a toque that would reflect my friend's characteristics: classy, unique, and cute. But I also wanted to make it functional and cozy; the double brim keeps ears warm without being too bulky, maintaining the integrity of the classic shape while also warding off the Canadian winter chill. Too add some extra interest, I designed the pattern in two-by-two rib, so that it wasn't too repetitive of a knit.

But still I wanted a little extra oomph; I had seen hats in stores before that were seamed along the top, and wanted to mimic that idea while keeping the fabric smooth and without disrupting the established rib too much. After trying a few different things, I landed on the final construction... and I have no idea what to call it! It's a wide strip of stitches that remain untouched during the decreases, and basically just adds some visual interest. A decrease band? A tab decrease?? No matter what it ends up being called, I think it's super cute and differentiates the North Shore beanie from other hat patterns.

As for the name, I kept it simple. The North Shore of Vancouver, British Columbia is a gorgeous city tucked up at the foot of a mountain. The classic shape and coziness of this beanie reflects the duality of Vancouver's North Shore: the sleek, modern city and the adventurous, outdoors-y hikes and suspension bridges. Plus, it's another ode to my friend Nour, whose family lives in that part of town.
